In this writing exercise — that often starts strong and flutters (but not this year, I DECLARE) — I decided to change things up.
It’s not really a change to how I write and communicate but rather to my mindset. The last few weeks have been a recharge in a sense. Doors have been opening and the lives of my family and friends have been changing in many ways.
First, my friend Scott, General Manager of our fantasy league, Buckeye Pride, is enjoying the initial moments of becoming an empty nester. His daughter is off to college while he and his wife are rekindling their relationship. It’s almost like they are dating again. My sister-in-law and her husband are going through the same as their two sons are college graduates and starting their new lives. Me and my wife are entering year three of parenthood with our son, Mikale. The terrible twos are among us and we are waiting for the inevitable pouting, crying and wailing.
Change is all around, yet for me, it’s not scary. It’s rewarding. Being in my late forties, I’ve been blessed to do things in my life and career to be content and proud. The new challenges ahead have given me a reset in life. It’s always good to have a purpose, a new set of goals and a solid plan to beat them.
That’s why… in this new era, I would like to declare a new focus to whoever is reading this. Please hold me accountable, I will all too easily beat myself up to keep this going. It’s time to focus on becoming a better person, better husband, father, writer, editor, podcaster, etc.
This will be the journey that I’m setting on this season. May this one be better than the last.
